AGR Internship Opportunity

 

The Home Office is proud to announce an exciting internship opportunity this summer.  We are looking for one or two dynamic undergraduates to take on the challenge of assisting a chapter other than their own by recruiting new members representing the breath, sophistication, scope and relevance of agriculture.  If you are a student with a passion for AGR, and think you have what it takes to be a successful recruiter, then you may be what we're looking for.

                                                                                                                                      

You will be expected, along with the help of local alumni and national leaders, to design a recruitment strategy along with a manageable budget, execute that strategy and produce results that will help that chapter consistently succeed in recruiting men of the highest potential.

 

These internships will provide you with the opportunity to travel to a different part of the country, learn more about AGR and the Home Office, meet some of the leaders of the National Fraternity, network with other AGR undergraduates and alumni, and gain new skills transferable to your career.  You will receive top notch training, professional support throughout the summer, and the experience of a lifetime!  There is a competitive compensation package provided along with a generous incentive package, along with the value of the knowledge and experience you will gain in the process.

A minimum of 3 years experience in retail meat sales, operations, or meat marketing/merchandising is required. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal channels is necessary.
This position requires extensive travel nationally and candidates must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.

Quality Laboratory Lead – Physiological Testing, Nampa, ID - 100

Role Purpose – 

The position will lead the daily activities of a quality testing lab to ensure that all activities are performed to meet product assessment and demand requirements.  Will ensure all prescribe testing protocols, methods, evaluations, interpretations and reporting meet company quality standards and in compliance with state, federal and international seed regulatory requirements.  This position ensures that all lab resources (personnel, assets and materials) are effectively managed to optimize capacity utilization.   

  

Accountabilities – 

Coordinate physiological seed testing activities to maintain company quality standards. 

Develops and implements a capacity planning program to ensure that resources are available when needed and the test volume can be turned around in the required timeline. 

Organize and schedule seed testing activities to optimize capacity of lab.  Supervise and develop staff to optimize lab output. 

Ensure quality technicians are properly trained for reliable and accurate test evaluations.  Maintains and directs training certification program of quality technicians. 

Responsible for supervising and directing all on-site quality testing.  Implement and direct testing through Quality Technician 2 staff. 

Coach and conduct employee performance evaluations bi-annually.  

Monitor and supervise all testing procedures for quality and quantity.  Maintains and develops internal testing protocols covering all aspects of the quality testing facility. 

Responsible to determine and monitor all department budgetary costs.  Responsibility encompasses the ability to forecast needs for capital proposals. 

Ensure that test evaluation cards are accurately filled out for data entry.  Routinely audit for discrepancies in test recordings. 

Monitor and supervise working conditions and repair for all testing equipment.  Manage technical and logistical issues with service vendors for decreased repair time. 

Provide support to field productions and plant conditioning in areas of technical expertise (i.e. protocols and training for disease inspections, seed health practices, week identification and tare analysis). 

Represent the company interests at an industry level to communicate and influence change regarding seed regulatory and testing issues. 

Participate in referee testing and experimentation to identify new test methods. 

Provide resource support and expertise to the Quality Tech Lead. 

Provide diagnostic support for research, basic/commercial seed production and claims. 

Issue Reports of Seed Analysis/Certificates for movement of seed both domestic and internationally. 

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, experience & capabilities –

4 year degree in Biology, Plant Science or related discipline with a minimum of 8 years of experience including 4 years of supervisory experience in a laboratory setting. 

Strong technical, communication and problem solving skills 

Previous experience supervising lab staff. 

Strong computer skills in MS Office required. 

Excellent communication skills. 

Function effectively in a team environment.

Basic Function: 

The incumbent will lead the effort in with planning, establishing, implementing, and maintaining a variety 

of occupational health, safety, security and environmental programs to assure the highest degree of 

safety for plant employees. He/She is responsible for Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) 

compliance with all applicable federal, state and local health, safety, and environmental laws, regulations 

and standards.  

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

1. Site implementation and administration of company injury and illness prevention program, and all 

company policies, and procedures as they relate to safety. 

2. Document and compile records from ethanol process flow and production records as required for 

environmental compliance.

9. Performs incident investigations of accidents and near misses and coordinates with general 

manager to notify external agencies when required. 

10.  Maintains Cal-OSHA records for the site. 

11.  If first on the scene, acts as Incident Commander, until relieved, for any spill, fire or natural 

disaster. 

12. Participates in plant team management meetings and activities. 

13. Reports to Plant Manager and works closely with other plant management staff while coordinating 

and receiving overall direction from Corporate EHS management. 

14. Participates in internal (assigned facility) and external (other Cilion facilities) EHS compliance

The EE-Crops will bring in-depth expertise to critical crop issues by applying his or her expertise to EFANS programs and priorities. Experience:  Two years' post-degree professional experience in an emphasis area related to the position is preferred and must be related to one or more of the following topics:  cropping systems, soil science, sustainable agriculture, organic and/or alternative production systems, ecology/natural resources, ag education, pest management, water management, precision farming, or agricultural engineering. Experience designing, delivering and evaluating cropping systems educational programs is preferred. Experience designing, conducting, and/or providing an essential role in research projects is preferred. Experience using technology in educational programming is preferred. Experience in grants and revenue development is preferred.

Accountabilities in this area include following quality management and control procedures through: o properly and accurately sorting out induction materials by populations, labeling and storing; o managing the entire haploid screening; o preparing haploid seeds for germination; o strict adherence to sowing-germination procedures including error-free labeling of all sown materials; o managing the pre-rootdip preparations of seedlings for doubling treatment; o managing potting; o managing transplanting (i.e. sequencing and accurate labeling of every population); o accurate labeling-identification of all harvested DH ears through shipping. • Ensure that the physical conditions and material quantity-quality requirements for doubling treatment are prepared in a timely and safe manner; • Perform doubling procedures with strict adherence to established technical and safety protocols and best laboratory management practices; • Laboratory and safety supplies management (inventory, purchasing) including accurate recording of chemical usage, waste disposal documentation; • Strict implementation-compliance to company-DH HSE policies and standards, including but not limited to: conduct of DH-related safety trainings, internal safety audit, proper use and disposal of PPEs, hazard communication to include warning labels, handling, storage, management of disposal of waste materials), process documentation; • Maintenance and upkeep of the doubling laboratory and DH work environment (i.e. equipment calibration, chemical handling fixtures and devices, chemical storage, water supply system, waste materials containments, environmental and growth monitoring equipment, housekeeping) • Assist in the conduct of experiments on alternative doubling models (e.g. hydroponics and the associated quality control in the preparation and monitoring-maintaining grow solutions); • Gathering, collating, and encoding of all experimental data; • Managing the dryer processing of DH harvest (i.e. monitoring and recording of moisture status of harvest testers in the dryer(s); • Regular soil (and plant tissues, if needed) sampling on DH Baby nursery; • Work jointly with Project Staff in scheduling work and allocating labor crew on a weekly basis; • Assist in all quality-assurance related crew training and skills development in all DH work to include pollination work; • Assist DH management on workers' performance evaluation; • Takes over the responsibilities of any Project Supervisor when the latter is away from work.

Critical knowledge:

BS degree in quality assurance-related discipline. • Broad knowledge of soil-plant-environment relationship; corn production cultural/agronomic requirements and plant growth and development; • Basic biological and plant physiological concepts particularly cell function; • Knowledge and direct exposure to corporate HSE policy environment;

Critical experience:

Regional Agronomy Manager – Kunia, HI

Role Purpose – 

In a highly team-oriented environment the Agronomy Manager will work with the various project managers and employees to provide timely, effective, efficient and consistent agronomic cultural care for the Syngenta Oahu Nurseries, Top Cross and Parent Seed crops. Working with the IPM/Scouting RA the Agronomy Manager will help create and develop IPM standards with the IPM RA. The Agronomy Manager will help create and develop fertigation scheduling and accountability with the fertigation/irrigation technician as well as any land preparation and conservation efforts that facilitate best farming practices. The Agronomy Manager will lead the production research effort to evaluate existing and future practices and implement those that result in improved crop production, quality, safety and cost savings. The effectiveness of this position is measured by Nursery, Trait and Parent Seed groups meeting strict timelines and returning target amounts of high quality seed, achieving across year reliability of seed increases and crosses, and maintaining budget efficiency. The Agronomy Manager will be responsible for initiating agronomic research that helps overcome bottlenecks in seed production in Hawaii and be capable of sharing these results on Oahu and Kauai. In addition, the agronomy manager will be required to ascertain and assess new technology that will help in seed production/research.

Accountabilities – 

Keeping Syngenta's Safety and Stewardship principles, practices and protocols in mind: • Supply agronomic support to the nursery, traits and parent seed operations at Oahu for all crops. • Provide oversight and develop the Oahu operations group to help ensure that activities are conducted such that they are timely, effective, efficient, cost-effective and safe and in accordance with defined SOP's. This includes land allocation to the various projects developed from methodically planned site selection. • Coordinate and aid in the execution of the scouting and IPM enterprise in order to provide the operations group with meaningful direction and input. • Coordinate and lead the execution of the production research effort in order to continually evaluate current practices and develop new practices in order to maximize crop productivity, quality, safety, and minimize cost and risk. This includes developing, executing and compliance with soil and water conservation plans developed by partner agencies. • Develop and refine SOP's for cultural group operations which are grounded in sound agronomy and production research. All SOP's will be developed from a computer-based platform that stores and recognizes the SOP's in a system that is available to access. • Provide stakeholders with regular agronomic updates; also technical reports and data summaries as required. Lead and initiate the weekly planning meeting for all projects. • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with all Hawaii staff. Function as a member of project/product teams as required • Maintain and expand agronomic knowledge through classes, seminars, web, etc. and share relevant information with others • Conduct agronomic research on-site and cooperate with Kauai personnel to develop process improvements for seed production. • Train agronomy team personnel across all aspects of seed quality and production. Quality Laboratory Lead – Physiological Testing, Nampa, ID

Role Purpose –

Responsible to determine and monitor all department budgetary costs.  Responsibility encompasses the ability to forecast needs for capital proposals. 

Ensure that test evaluation cards are accurately filled out for data entry.  Routinely audit for discrepancies in test recordings. 

Monitor and supervise working conditions and repair for all testing equipment.  Manage technical and logistical issues with service vendors for decreased repair time. 

Provide support to field productions and plant conditioning in areas of technical expertise (i.e. protocols and training for disease inspections, seed health practices, week identification and tare analysis). 

Represent the company interests at an industry level to communicate and influence change regarding seed regulatory and testing issues. 

Participate in referee testing and experimentation to identify new test methods. 

Provide resource support and expertise to the Quality Tech Lead. 

Provide diagnostic support for research, basic/commercial seed production and claims. 

Issue Reports of Seed Analysis/Certificates for movement of seed both domestic and internationally.

Role Purpose – 

Leading Hawaii conversion team in introgression of key traits into Syngenta germplasm.

Accountabilities – 

Coordinate with Station staff and external service providers such as marker and ELISA labs to ensure all nursery activities such as planting, sampling, pollinations, and harvest are accomplished with required timeliness. o Maximum cycle times of 120 days from planting to the next planting o Adequate staff for planting preparation, sampling, pollination and harvest • Closely coordinate and communicate project status with Trait Conversion Scientist and other conversion team leads located on Oahu or Kauai. o Maintain and report an accurate and timely project status of assigned conversion projects. o Ensure adequate parental seed is on hand for each planting cycle. o As required, be able to track and communicate to stakeholders of conversion projects conversion seed quantity and its location • Accurately communicate with other station functions concerning the coordination and sharing of station resources. • Full compliance with and ownership of Trait Stewardship guidelines. o Operate within and enforce Syngenta stewardship policies and processes. o Fully understand and adhere to SQC gateways. o Develop or oversee the development of Site Work Instructions and protocols pertaining to trait conversion function. • Encourage safety awareness and fully support station safety objectives. • Train and develop direct reports as well as assist in the training of other station personnel as appropriate. • Working with Station Management, maintain a fair and even allocation of additional assignments for direct reports on station teams.

Knowledge, experience & capabilities –

Critical knowledge:

M.S. degree in a scientific discipline or a BS with the equivalent of at least three years of experience in a related field. • Ability to use personal computer and standard office software. • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of corn breeding. • Ability to learn and develop proficiency with complex plant breeding software applications

Critical experience:

Experience in corn trait conversion activities, or in trait conversion programs of other crops. • Experience in working with regulated traits in field environments • Experience in continuous nursery.

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities:

Ability to work in a team and to communicate with individuals in the company. • Ability and motivation to learn new technologies and concepts. • Demonstrated leadership ability. • Ability to provide day to day direction to employees as required. • May be required to obtain a pesticide operators license and commercial driver's license.

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Coordinator

 
The Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) Coordinator will be responsible for leading the Consumer Health Services Division food and safety training for both department staff and Wyoming's food or meat establishments based on the HACCP plans and Standard Operating Procedures(SOPs). This position also reviews and audits all HACCP food safety plans for all slaughter and processing plants, food establishments and school lunch programs in Wyoming. 
To accomplish HACCP training for staff and establishment personnel, this position will continually monitor and research USDA/FSIS updates for the latest scientific justifications that are required to support HACCP plans. Creates HACCP templates for adoption by various meat and food establishments, updating those templates as required by changing justifications or policies. 
This coordinator trains both staff and establishment personnel regarding the facets of HACCP and how to self-audit their processes or methods in order to assure food safety is maintained. This position also maintains the catalog of scientific justifications required that support the HACCP plans. Every method for all processes has is own scientific justification and has to be verified by USDA, so this position constantly reviews scientific justifications and critically examines abstracts and research papers for scientific justifications for each method of slaughter, processing or food preparation to substantiate that all elements of any HACCP plan meets the requirements of USDA or FDA.
 In addition to in-depth HACCP training for staff and establishment personnel, this position also provides templates for these documents as defined by USDA and FDA: SOPs, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Sanitary Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs) and all monitoring logs.
